WORKSHOP TITLE: AMERICAN HISTORY HOLLYWOOD STYLE
WORKSHOP SUMMARY:
Does Hollywood ever get American history right? Does altering America’s history make for a better movie filled with more action, more drama, more heroism than the real history? This workshop explores Hollywood’s version of the history of the American Revolution/War of 1812 period, the Civil War, westward expansion, and World War II America. Each week prior to viewing excerpts of selected films, we will establish the historical context, investigating the time frame in which the movies were produced, the world events that impacted the movies’ messages, and America’s sociopolitical climate. After the films, we will contrast Hollywood’s vision of these pivotal time periods with actual historical accounts, discussing ways in which Hollywood manipulated historical details in order to present a more dynamic story.
WORKSHOP AGE RANGE/TARGET AUDIENCE:

WORKSHOP TITLE: AMERICAN EXPERIENCES IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE
WORKSHOP SUMMARY:
Eleanor Roosevelt once noted that it is not possible to comprehend the world from a single viewpoint. In order to become good world leaders, she insisted that Americans must first come to understand the people who comprise our own nation. Such an understanding begins, in part, with becoming more aware of what our children are taught and the influence children’s literature has on society. This workshop explores how different children’s books express what it means to be/become an American and to live in America. We will delve into the ways different cultures continue their traditions while blending into the preverbal melting pot. We will also investigate how text and visuals tell complementing and\or contrasting stories.
WORKSHOP AGE RANGE/TARGET AUDIENCE:
The target audience is K-12 teachers, librarians, parents, and any teens and adults interested in learning about the diversity of American stories available in our pluralistic society.
