The College of Arts and Sciences Student Assistance Fund
The College of Arts and Sciences, through the generosity of several donors, has established a fund to provide critical financial support for students who, but for a relatively small yet unattainable financial need, almost make it to graduation only to have to withdraw before they complete their studies.
This fund also provides financial help to enable students with documented need to take advantage of enrichment opportunities such as study abroad, undergraduate research, and internships. In this way, these students may enjoy the “full college experience”, the broadest education possible.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicants must be enrolled in a course of study (major or minor) within the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Preference based on class rank is given to those students who have no more than three semesters remaining until they are able to graduate.
- Students who require critical financial support in order to earn their degree are encouraged to apply for funding.
- The Fund is administered by the College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Education Awards Committee. The committee works in close collaboration with the Office of Financial Aid to confirm need and coordinate the overall financial aid for the recipient. Preference is given to applicants who have completed a higher number of academic credit hours in order to prevent complications with financial aid.
- The recipients are required to meet with their academic counselors to ensure that their academic requirements are met.
- Recipients must account for the disposition of the funds and provide a timely report on how the funds assisted them in insuring graduation or accomplishing other academic achievement. In addition, the recipients are required to meet with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education to keep him/her apprised of their progress throughout their funding period.
Application Procedure:
Application for assistance is confidential and submitted to the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office. University faculty and staff are encouraged to recommend students whom they believe would qualify.
Students who apply for funding must provide:
- A narrative of their time at UB, their current financial situation, and their future plans. Please include your name, UB person number, mailing address and your citizenship.
- A specific budget explaining how much money they are asking for, and how it will be spent.
- An explanation of why these funds are needed to allow them to graduate.
- A copy of their latest DARS report.
- One letter of recommendation from an advisor or faculty member.
Submission Deadline: Funds are awarded each semester or academic year, as needed.
