Professor Moti Lal Rustgi contributed immensely to the University at Buffalo’s Department of Physics for nearly 26 years. Dr. Rustgi was not only an exceptional teacher, dedicated to spreading knowledge but his many prestigious achievements include: Fellow of the American Physical Society; Visiting Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook; Visiting Scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory; and Faculty Research Participant at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C.
His legacy of service and commitment to UB continues to be carried on by the Rustgi family, including Dr. Vinod Rustgi, who serves as a College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Advisory Council member, who created The Rustgi Scholars Fund to support opportunities for students to study abroad. Experiencing life and learning in a foreign country, Dr. Rustgi believes, will help student to become better citizens of the world because they will have lived in a different culture, will have learned to adapt to unfamiliar circumstances, and will have become independent and comfortable in diverse cultural settings.
In 2007, the Rustgi family endowed the Moti Lal Rustgi Professorship, the first-ever endowed professorship in the Department of Physics. The family also generously funded the Moti Lal Rustgi Memorial Lecture, a program has brought internationally known researchers, including four Nobel Laureates, to the UB campus since it was created in 1993.
In addition, in 2003, the Rustgi brothers donated their father’s pedagogical and research materials to the UB University Archive, and one year later, established the Moti Lal Rustgi Archive Fund in support of preserving science faculty papers.
