Referendum On The CAS Bylaws

Ayes: 160
Nays: 32
Abstain: 1

Colleagues,

Here is a final draft of the <& /sitewide/comp/plaf/link.comp, href => "/for-faculty/index.html?tabs=documents&cBox=bylawsDoc&mBox=documentsList", text => "Bylaws of the College of Arts and Sciences." &> Following extensive deliberations, both the Steering Committee and the Policy Committee of the College have strongly endorsed them.

The Committee has asked me to direct your particular attention to the provisions for voting members of the Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Committee. These Bylaws do not duplicate the old systems of the Faculties; instead of providing sub-committees, in which like-votes-on-like, there is stipulated a procedure for departmental nominations which should provide specialized knowledge on the large committee.

Also, you might heed the idea that provision has been made for the presence of Associate Professors on the APT Committee. The question was raised whether this stipulation provides for adequate representation of women on the committee.

This referendum takes place in accordance with Article XI, Adoption of the these Bylaws: "These bylaws will be adopted upon approval by a majority of those voting in a mail ballot of the Voting Faculty of the College of Arts & Sciences." Please vote your approval or disapproval of these Bylaws on the attached ballot and return it by Wednesday, March 15, 2000. Your ballot must be placed and sealed in the white envelope provided; the white envelope should then be placed in the ballot envelope. Be sure to sign the ballot envelope.

James H. Bunn, Chair
Interim Policy Committee
