MEMORANDUM

To: Deans
From: Elizabeth D. Capaldi, Provost
Subject: Policy on Faculty Workload

The following is our policy on faculty workload. Please circulate to your chairs and other concerned parties. Thank you.

Research expectations of tenured and tenure track faculty have always been high at the University at Buffalo, as they are at all AAU institutions. Each UB School and the College of Arts and Sciences has a set of research output expectations for its tenured faculty that include a mix of high quality publications and (where appropriate) funded research. Expectation of peer-reviewed output also holds in artistic fields of creative endeavor.

To insure that faculty workloads are equitably distributed, those whose research output has been evaluated as not meeting the standard for the School or College for two consecutive years should be assigned to increased teaching and service responsibilities.

In most circumstances, this added responsibility would involve some combination of extra teaching and greater-than-average service assignments.
