Recommendation of CAS Committee on Centers and Institutes
(endorsed by CAS Policy Committee on April 22, 2002; vote: 18-0-2
1. Periodic Review & Reappointment of Center/Institute
Directors:
Unless contrary to the terms of their appointment, all Center/Institute Directors
are subject to periodic review for reappointment. This review should be conducted
by the designee of the Dean of the College, the Provost, or the Vice President for
Research, consistent with the office through which the Center/Institute is funded
or the office to which the Center/Institute Director reports. This review shall be
held at intervals of not less than three years, and not more than five years unless
a shorter time period is specifically mandated by prior agreement. All Center/Institute
members who hold faculty-rank appointments may participate in this periodic review process.
2. Periodic Review of Center Employees:
All non-State employees of a Center/Institute should have periodic reviews by the
Center/Institute Director(s), or their designee.
This review should occur at intervals of not less than one year and no longer than two years.
This review should include all significant aspects of job performance, and this review
should be tied to salary increase decisions. It is encouraged that this review be summarized
in written form, and be placed in the employee's file.
3. Annual Disclosure of Center/Institute Funding Expenditures:
In those Centers/Institutes that receive annual funding from the University
at Buffalo, the annual report of the Center/Institute should include an accounting of the
expenditure of those funds provided by the University. This report, including the accounting
of funds from the University, should be given to all members of the Center/Institute who
have academic faculty appointments, as well as all principal investigators.
