The Graduate History Association includes all History graduate students and provides a number of services. As part of the University’s Graduate Student Association, it sends a representative to its council and its members are eligible for small grants, including research and conference funding (the Mark Diamond Fund). The GHA also allocates some funds to help with conference travel and students who are planning on attending conferences and/or presenting papers can request financial assistance. They will need to include a travel budget.
The GHA appoints two representatives to the History department’s graduate committee. Each March, the GHA organizes a conference, the Plesur conference, with an invited keynote speaker and a day of presentations by graduate students from History, other departments at UB, and other universities. This activity is funded in part by the Graduate Students Association and by the department of History.
The GHA holds regular meetings to
discuss graduate student concerns and topics of mutual interest.
For example: there is a graduate representative on
every departmental faculty search and the graduate students
get together to evaluate candidates.
On the fun side, the GHA holds end of the year parties and informal happy hours throughout the year. In the summer, it conducts a weekly softball game.
