Message from the Dean

Bruce D. McCombe The future of the College of Arts and Sciences looks brighter than ever. We've continued on a path of innovation and growth, with our departments positioning themselves to move into the ranks of the most highly rated and internationally recognized for outstanding academic programs and research among public research universities.

As we grow, we're committed to improving the academic experiences of our more than 13,000 students by offering undergraduates more scholarships, more research experiences, and more study-abroad opportunities. We've increased graduate student support to improve the quantity and quality of our teaching assistants, while simultaneously increasing the quality of research and scholarly activity.

A dedicated and highly accomplished faculty is essential to achieving our academic goals and enhancing our reputation. To meet our goals we've increased by over 80 tenure/tenure track professors during the past six years, bringing our faculty number to 482. Of this total, nearly half were hired in the past several years, making the faculty remarkably different than it was only a short while ago and injecting enormous vitality and talent into our many activities. With a steady improvement in the quality and level of our teaching, research and creative activities, the College is on its way to reaching a hiring goal of 500 full-time faculty by 2009.

Continuing on our path of success would not be possible without the support of our loyal alumni and friends, who understand the value of education and the importance of enriching the lives of our students and our greater community.
